On Sunday, July 25th, in rainy London, England, a Muslim man stabbed a 5’2”-tall Christian female street preacher named Hatun Tash. The attacker’s blade struck her once in the forehead above her right eye and then on her wrist as she put her arms up to defend herself. The man used considerable force, so the stabbing could have been deadly. It all took place at Speakers’ Corner in Hyde Park, reports Pastor Mark Durie.
WITNESS: “Somebody call the ambulance, bro.”
WITNESS 2: “You don’t have any right to do this! You don’t have any right to do this!”
WITNESS 3: “You are sick people! Sick!”
WITNESS 2: “You don’t have any right to do this. I don’t care. You don’t attack women.”
WITNESS 3: “This is what Islam has brought to Britain.”
After the Muslim attacker stabbed her twice, Christian brothers grabbed the knife out of his hand and the knifeman ran away as they rushed to her aid. Tash collapsed from the shock.
WITNESS 4: “Sister. Oh, she’s not awake. Hello? Sister?”
Speakers’ Corner is a place where anyone can turn up, get up on a soap box, and deliver their message to whomever will listen. In recent decades, this spot has become a place where Christians and Muslims discuss, Sunday by Sunday, the claims of Christianity and Islam. Hatun Tash, director of Defend Christ, Critique Islam Ministries, is a regular there, taking the apologetic challenge to Muslims.
In her own words, Tash explained what happened.
TASH: “On Sunday, at Speakers’ Corner, I got attacked by an individual with a knife.”
WITNESS: “Oh, woah, woah, woah!”
TASH: “I arrived at Speakers’ Corner, like every other Sunday. Suddenly, when I turned around, I noticed people are running, chasing behind someone.”
WITNESS: “What happened?”
(sound of police siren)
TASH: “I was bleeding. I got a knife attack. I am okay — by God’s grace. I had pieces of knife left in my clothes. I think that that knife is broken. I would say, ‘I’m here because it wasn’t my time. God has been gracious to me and He wanted me to stay in this world a little bit longer.’
“Speakers’ Corner, I think, is a great place for all of us to go and practice our freedom of speech. I am Christian. And if you go to Speakers’ Corner, you will see Muslim missionaries. So that is a platform for me to preach the glorious Gospel. That is platform for me to keep Islam accountable.”
Tash explained what Islam teaches about the Quran.
TASH: “Islam teaches that: ‘There is only one Quran, perfectly preserved, dot by dot, letter by letter, sound, by sound, word by word. Wherever you go around the world, it’s exactly the same. Allah gave it to Mohammed through Angel Gabriel. Mohammed delivered it to people. It has been written, and it never changed because Allah promises in Surah 15:9, he is going to protect the book.’”
Tash raised reasons for doubt in the Muslim mind, and then transitions to a presentation about Christianity.
TASH: “In the academic circle, it is very well known that there are different Arabic Qurans. But that information never been passed in Islam, that causes billions of people today to stay in Islam. Because their fathers, their mothers, their imams all told them there is only one Quran. They never heard the alternative.
“God has been gracious. Today, we’ve got 37 different Arabic Qurans. In 2016, we had 26. Today, we have 37. So, once they’ve been exposed to the idea that there is more than one Quran, it is causing people to give up Islam. Because they’re hunting for the Eternal Word of God, perfect and preserved, unchanged.
“From that, it is very easy for Christian evangelists to point people to the Lord Jesus Christ. Lord Jesus Christ is identified as the eternal Word of God. He is unchanged. He is uncorrupted, He is the perfect Word of God. So, it’s good way to kind of link them and then have Muslims to come to Christ.”
Pastor Jay Davis, a colleague of hers, explained what happened when Tash regained consciousness.
DAVIS: “Once she started standing up, God bless her, as we know Hatun does all the time, she started preaching the Gospel. Just saying, ‘Come on Muslims, you need to repent. You need Jesus Christ.’ What a brave soul we’ve got and what an enormously courageous woman we have on our team. I’m so proud of the fact that rather than sit there and use hate, she just said, ‘Listen, Muslims, you can do better than that. Come on home to Jesus Christ!”
James 1:12 says, “Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love Him.”
