Evolutionary textbooks teach us that millions of years ago the world was a pretty warm place with flora and fauna living on land masses that were fertile and blissfully uninhabited by humans. Then, in anticipation of the rise of Al Gore, Brexit, and anti-abortion legislators, the climate changed and dinosaurs and vegetation died off. Their destruction became the source of the coal and oil that we today use to again change the climate. Oh, and our dairy cattle and termites keep belching and contributing to global warming, cooling, er… change.
Climate change, as we know from being badgered about it in movies and news and state-controlled classrooms, is BAD, BAD, BAD. Why, if we don’t somehow stop climate change the beaches all over the world will move inland and ruin the real estate values of Southern California and Martha’s Vineyard. From this we can infer that melting ice is the main marker and danger of climate change. Message: Ice = Good; Water = Bad. Warmth = Bad; Cool = Good.
Scientists tell us that our current ice age, known as the Quaternary Ice Age, started about 2-1/2 million years ago and that ice sheets have been advancing and retreating on 40,000- to 100,000-year glacial periods, apparently without aid or interference from humans.
Volcanos may have had an impact on the beginnings or the ends of ice ages because of the enormous quantities of CO2 and methane released in a volcanic eruption. We surmise that the massive weight of the dinosaurs put pressure on the tectonic plates, squeezing lava and volcanic emissions onto the face of an adolescent earth. Clearasil and maturity put an end to excessive volcanos and a beginning to the glaciers. Whew.
From the early 1300s to about 1850 the Earth experienced what is known as the “Little Ice Age.” It was little because it wasn’t big.But it was large enough to freeze canals in Holland so that Hans Brinker could win his silver skates. This was a good thing because Hans Brinker, or the Silver Skates is a pretty good book.
Since farming was negatively affected by the cold, there was a Great Famine from 1315-1317. Climate changers are divided on the benefits of losing somewhere between 10% – 33% of the population in European nations. Fewer polluters = fewer emissions equals more cool; more ice. Sounds good. But gloating about (non-abortion) death is unbecoming and probably not PC.
And scientists are struggling with it because the onset of the Little Ice Age may have been owing to excessive volcanic activity. This time, the volcanos put up too much ash which reflected the sun’s heat away from the earth. The struggle is whether volcanos put out too much ash or too much greenhouse gas. Thankfully, the United Nations Convention on Climate Change is developing recommended limits for numbers of volcanos per year along with allowable ash and gas emission limits. We can sleep well tonight!
Last to be considered is Sun Spot activity which is also implicated in the Little Ice Age. There was a well-documented dearth of sun spots from 1650-1720. This inactivity may have affected the quantity of heat reaching the earth. Plus, the sun is orange and so is Donald Trump’s hair – need we say more?
I called this essay “Climate Change in Perspective.” Now for the perspective:
Job 38:4-7
“Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?
Tell Me, if you have understanding.
Who determined its measurements?
Surely you know!
Or who stretched the line upon it?
To what were its foundations fastened?
Or who laid its cornerstone,
When the morning stars sang together,
And all the sons of God shouted for joy?

Do you not fear Me?’ says the LORD.
‘Will you not tremble at My presence,
Who have placed the sand as the bound of the sea,
By a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass beyond it?
And though its waves toss to and fro,
Yet they cannot prevail;
Though they roar, yet they cannot pass over it.
Is God going to allow the seas to overflow their bounds?
Does God know how the climate works? Does He know what we need before we ask?
I am not in favor of pollution or abuse of the land. We are stewards and need to remember Who actually owns the earth. However, it’s not as fragile as the environmental snowflakes would have us believe. The feeble efforts of man are not soon going to overwhelm God’s creation.
The environmentalist/climate changer is engaged in a power game, not a stewardship game. It’s more about controlling what people can and cannot do. When we abandon God and His Law we always face tyranny. Let’s remember Who is really in control. We cannot legislate climate any more than we can gravity.
